Hula Daddy wins first place at cupping competition
Hula Daddy Kona Coffee achieved the top cupping score out of 54 entries in the Kona Coffee Festival Cupping Competition. “The coffee we entered into the contest was an arabica variety called Red Bourbon,” said Karen Paterson, owner of Hula Daddy. “We handpicked the beans for these trees five years ago, hand planted them in grow bags and then hand transplanted them to our high mountain farm on the Hualalai volcano. We have waited five years for them to mature, hoping they would be world class.”
Hula Daddy only processes coffee grown on its 30-acre farm and only sells the coffee at its visitor center and on the Internet.
Portuguese stone oven bread baking is Tuesday
The Kona Historical Society Portuguese bread baking program will be open for a bake day starting at 10 a.m. Tuesday. Come help roll out dough then purchase a loaf of Portuguese bread starting around 12:45 p.m. until it is sold out. The program will be closed Nov. 27. America Recycles Day celebrated in Hilo
Recycle Hawaii will hold an America Recycles Day celebration Thursday at the Palace Theatre in Hilo.
From 2:30 to 5:15 p.m., the event will include free fun for youth such as singing, dancing and craft making and the movie “Huliau” will be shown.
“Trashed” will be shown at 5:30 and “Racing to Zero” will be played at 7 p.m., followed by a panel discussion about Hawaii Island’s zero waste potential.

Smokers urged to quit during the Great American Smokeout
The American Cancer Society is encouraging people to quit smoking as part of the Great American Smokeout Thursday.
According to American Cancer Society statistics, 890 new cases of lung cancer are predicted to be diagnosed in 2014 in Hawaii. Additionally, lung cancer, the leading cause of cancer deaths in both men and women, will result in 580 deaths this year in the state.
It’s not easy to quit smoking. Studies have indicated that cigarettes are as addictive as heroin, and the first three weeks after a person quits are said to be the most difficult. The organization offers tips on how to break free from a smoking addiction and options for low-cost counseling and other support by calling 800-227-2345.

Lava flow update meeting is Thursday
A lava flow update meeting will be held at 6:30 p.m. Thursday in the Pahoa High School cafeteria and will include representatives from Hawaii County Civil Defense and the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory.
Also, an incident command center and informational resource center are open at the Pahoa Community Center. Residents may visit the center from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday for answers to questions.

Heart workshops offered

Reading program focuses on healthy eating
The Friends of the Libraries, Kona is hosting a free family Read Aloud program on healthy eating from 5 to 6:30 p.m. Tuesday at the Kailua-Kona Public Library. Simple recipes will be provided and participants will make an easy, healthy snack.
Registration is from 4:30 to 5 p.m. in front of the library. The program is held the last Tuesday of each month.
